How are sentences detected?
We use Intl.Segmenter, the Unicode sentence-boundary rules built into your browser. It ends a sentence at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space and a new sentence, and copes with quotes and closing brackets.
Are abbreviations like "Dr." counted as sentence ends?
Sometimes. The Unicode rules treat "Dr. Smith" as a break when the next word is capitalised, which can add one sentence per abbreviation. Check the count by eye if your text is full of abbreviations.
What is a good average sentence length?
Plain-language guides such as the UK Government Digital Service style guide suggest keeping most sentences to about 25 words or fewer. Aim for variety rather than a fixed length.
