The letter that breaks most case converters

English has one letter i. Turkish has two: dotted i/İ and dotless ı/I. Uppercasing “istanbul” with English rules gives ISTANBUL, which a Turkish reader sees as a misspelling. Switch the rules and watch the dots.

ISTANBUL IRMAKUPPERCASE
istanbul irmakand back to lowercase

Under English rules the round trip loses information: ı becomes I, and I comes back as i. Under Turkish rules each letter keeps its partner. German has its own quirk: ß has no single-letter capital in everyday use, so “straße” uppercases to STRASSE.

Questions

How do I change uppercase to lowercase?

Paste the text and click "lowercase". To keep the first letter of each sentence capitalised, click "Sentence case" instead.

Why does the language setting matter?

Turkish and Azerbaijani have a dotted and a dotless i. In Turkish, lowercase i becomes İ and uppercase I becomes ı. Generic converters get this wrong; choose Turkish and ours follows the Unicode locale rules built into your browser.

What is the difference between camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case?

All three join words without spaces for use in code. camelCase capitalises every word after the first (userName), snake_case joins lowercase words with underscores (user_name), and kebab-case uses hyphens (user-name), which is common in URLs and CSS.

Is there a case converter in Microsoft Word?

Word has Change Case (Aa) on the Home tab and the Shift+F3 shortcut, which cycles lowercase, UPPERCASE and Capitalize Each Word. It has no sentence case shortcut for mixed text, no camelCase or snake_case, and follows English rules for the Turkish i.

What does Sentence case do with names?

It lower-cases everything and then capitalises the first letter of each sentence and the pronoun "I". Proper nouns such as "Paris" become lowercase, so check names afterwards.
