Where hidden characters come from

Zero-width spaces are added by some websites and editors to allow line breaks in long words or URLs. Word processors insert no-break spaces after short words in French and before units. A byte-order mark (U+FEFF) often sits at the very start of files saved by Windows tools. None of these show on screen, but all of them change character counts and can stop a search or a password from matching.

The Unicode Standard lists these as "default ignorable" or space characters. The detector checks for the common ones, including directional marks that can make text display in a different order than it is stored.

Questions

What is an invisible character?

A Unicode character that takes up space but shows nothing, like the Hangul Filler (U+3164) or Braille Pattern Blank (U+2800), or one that has no width at all, like the zero-width space (U+200B). Apps that reject an empty field often accept them.

Which invisible character works for a blank name?

The Hangul Filler (U+3164) is the one most often accepted for blank names in games and apps. If a platform strips it, try the Braille Pattern Blank (U+2800). Platforms change their rules, so test before relying on one.

How do I copy and paste a blank space?

Press Copy next to a character in the list, then paste where you need it. The button copies exactly one character; press it again or paste several times for more.

Why would text contain hidden characters?

Copying from PDFs, web pages, chat apps and AI tools can carry zero-width spaces, joiners, byte-order marks and non-breaking spaces. They can make two identical-looking words fail to match, break code or URLs, and change character counts.

Can invisible characters be used to watermark or track text?

They can: some systems hide patterns of zero-width characters in text. The detector here lists every one it finds with its code point, so you can see and remove them.
